Meet The Winner - Ben Osborne
2019 PHOTO COMP WINNER: Meet the winner of the Gage Roads Brewing Co 'TRAVEL' category - Ben Osborne. Reigning from the Sunny Coast in Aus, Ben is a talented freelance photographer who's career has seen him travel the world. His style is unique and so diverse, shooting digital and now exploring the world of film - we can't wait to see what the future holds for Ben, and more specifically, what gold is yet to be uncovered in his draw full of undeveloped rolls.
Hey Ben! Congrats on taking out the Travel Category in the 2019 Photo Comp! This image encapsulates the meaning of ‘Travel’ perfectly. Tell us a little bit of background to this photo.
Hey Guys, Thanks so much! Pretty blown away with the result! I shot this image with a few mates during a routine trip up the beach. The day started out pretty average weather wise but that didn’t dampen our spirits at all. We had surfed all morning around the points of Noosa but definitely couldn’t get enough waves so packed all our gear and off we went. Being the only one on the bike, Matt didn’t mind the weather. Flying up and down past our cars, not caring about what the rain was doing and that’s when this image was taken. What I really like about the image is that even though it’s pretty gloomy out, our spirits were high because we all knew what we where going to be met with at the end of the journey.
What equipment did you use when shooting this photo?
My go to setup for pretty much everything I shoot is my trusted Canon 5d mkIII with a Canon 24-70mm 2.8. Such a versatile combination on the land and in the water.
Your feed looks like you love digital mediums. Do you ever explore film photography and/or cinematography?
I’ve recently been getting really into film photography and has been super fun to start learning again and taking my time with what I’m doing. I own a Contax T2 and a Nikon Fm2 which are super fun to use. I also have a draw full of undeveloped rolls at home that are slowly being sent off. I’m a huge fan of cinematography as well but sadly don’t go down that road very often. In the future it’s definitely something I can see myself doing more of.
What’s it like living on the Sunny Coast? Do you feel like the location offers you a huge opportunity to shoot some really cool and scenic landscapes?
The Sunny coast is so beautiful and I’m super grateful that I get to call it home. Living on the beach is definitely a huge plus as well haha. The landscapes here are wild at times and it’s pretty diverse. The beach and the ocean are right on your front door with beautiful mountains and hinterland only a short drive away. Sadly I don’t shoot get to shoot that stuff as much as I would like, as I feel you kind of get caught in a bubble with Noosa as its pretty pristine, but over the past little bit I’ve started expanding where I look for shoots which has been super rewarding.
What’s your favourite place to shoot and why? No need to name specific locations.
Currently my favourite place to shoot is Sri Lanka. There are so many wave opportunities with such crazy landscapes and not to mention the food! It also blows me away how amazing the people are over there.
What’s in store for the next 12 months? Any big campaigns in the works? What should we expect to see from Ben Osborne?
Not too sure at the moment haha? My travel plans are always up in the air so they could come at any moment. Apart from that I’ve got a few personal series I’m working on which will hopefully allow me to see things with a new perspective.
What will you be spending your winnings on?
Most likely my draw of undeveloped film! I’m excited to see what they hold!
Cheers mate!
No worries guys! Thanks heaps!
