A Few Words by Ollie Whitham
My name is Ollie Whitham, I’m 18 and I was born and raised in Fremantle, a little port city, just south of Perth, Western Australia. Having bought my first DSLR, I quickly became intrigued with capturing the natural world in the form of landscapes and animals. Eventually what I think that drove me to splash out and purchase a housing was the challenge of operating a camera in a different element entirely and shit it’s definitely a challenge. As well as seeing what other photographers where doing with water photography. In the few years that I’ve been shooting, I’ve experienced some unique moments; to name a couple, sitting in the channel to see the shark watch chopper hover directly above me indicating that a 3 metre great white was lurking in the channel I was bobbing in. Flooding my camera and lens completely, as well as cracking the front element of my port on the reef at the Box. But with that I’ve met some of the most talented photographers in the game and learnt so much from them as well as experiencing some world class waves break in front (and sometimes) on me.

Some goals in terms of my photography this year would to be more experimental with my camera settings, (slow shutter as well as high aperture.) And to push myself out to some bigger waves to shoot.

Regarding this Covoid-19 shit show, hopefully beaches won’t be closed. But if it comes to that, suppose there’s no shortage of time to learn the ins and outs of Lightroom in isolation haha.

I’m a pretty firm believer in the quote, “skill in photography not acquired by purchase but by practice” – written by someone on the internet.

The gear I use:
 Nikon d3200
Nikkor 35mm f1.8g
Nikkor 10.5mm f2.8
SPL Waterhousing
