I Don’t Understand Photographers by Wilder Fajardo
I don’t understand photographers. What are they doing looking into those little boxes all day? Why aren’t they just surfing? Is it really that difficult to capture an amazing surf photo? I don’t get it!!! These were thoughts that rifled through my mind as I would pass photographers on the beach and in the water.
A back injury at the beginning of last winter forced me to look for other ways to enjoy the surf without compromising myself. Finally the film camera sitting on my desk had its chance to shine and prove its worth. With the guidance and enthusiasm of some amazing friends I’ve learned to appreciate this art that we share. Now these days I look at my Nikonos V as fondly as I do my favorite surfboard.
The parallels between film photography and surfing resonate with me. Both are a constant process of learning. Dedication is a must. Good judgement accelerates progress. Positioning is vital. Opportunity is everywhere. The canvas, be it wave or film, may require everything or nothing at all.
Living on the North Shore of Oahu for the past five years has given me ample opportunities to develop as a person, surfer, and now photographer. I will forever be grateful for this coastline in the middle of the pacific and the people that protect it.
All photographs captured with the Nikonos V.
