The Ocean - A Home Away From Home by Kevin Rackham
The culture surfing creates anywhere around the world is something that’s addictive and so inclusive. That’s essentially what I try to capture in my shots and what I’m sure many surfers can relate to.
It was only a couple of years ago that I found out dad had an old film camera stashed away in the garage. As soon as I picked it up I knew it was something I was going to love. The moments I’ve been able to capture and the way the images turn out are perfect for what I’m trying to display.
The surf culture in Perth is great to be a part of. It involves many sunny days hanging out with mates and searching up and down the coast to enjoy the small waves. It’s a place in which you have to be quite content with small swells and onshore winds most of the time however everyone still has a great time. Paired with my board and camera it’s often a hard choice to either snap these awesome moments of mates tearing it up on their logs or join in with them.
A recent trip to Portugal also showed me that, wherever you are in the world, the love for getting out in the waves and the inclusiveness of surfing no matter where you’re from is the same. I captured everything from surfing elite at the WSL in front of huge crowds of passionate surfers, to locals and other travelers sharing their secret spots and genuine good times with me.
The ocean and waves can be so different from place to place but still provides happiness and joy all over the world, it’ll be a place I’m always involved with and will love what it creates forever. I hope you enjoy these photos and remember to get out there and just enjoy surfing for what it is, a great time with mates and meeting people from all walks of life who all have a passion for surfing.
