Trevor Murphy
Our next interview is with Trevor Murphy - born and raised on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Travel is a huge part of Trevor's life, as he spends most of his time in Indonesia shooting. We were lucky enough to ask him about recent trips to Namibia and South Africa, where the wildlife and surf offer great photographic experiences, as well as being on the cover Costco’s monthly publication with a Bethany Hamilton image. Unreal.

Hey Trevor! Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions for us, much appreciated man. To kick things off, tell us – where abouts are you from and when did you pick up your first camera?
Hello guys my Name is Trevor Murphy, I was born and raised on Cape Cod Massachusetts. Cape Cod is small spit of land that sticks out into the cold north Atlantic. I caught the photography bug about nine years ago and haven’t looked back since.

Where in the world has your camera taken you so far?
Photography and my camera have taken me far and wide and have definitely opened my eye to places I normally would have ventured too.  Africa to Indonesia, Europe to South America and most places in between.

Favourite place to travel?
My favorite place to travel to at the moment is Namibia and South Africa. The surf is great and the wildlife is amazing and the photographic experiences there are second to none. From lions to mile high red sand dunes, it a stunning journey and I can’t wait to go back.

Any future trips planned?
I have a couple trips lined up. Indonesia is my second home and I try to branch out from there during the season. Australia, South Africa and Japan are on my list this year... and possibly Madagascar if I’m lucky.

Who do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from a lot of people, places and cultures. Today with the internet you see and are exposed to so many different things at unbelievable rate it’s hard to pick one thing. If I had to choose early on Dale Kobetich would be a major influence. He’s a genius and builds the raddest stuff, he is a true pioneer in underwater photography.

What has been a career highlight for you so far?
Career highlight would be getting the cover Costco’s monthly publication with a Bethany Hamilton image. I used to strive for the Surfing magazine covers and such.  Costco called me and said they loved my work and wanted to run some photos. Then they explained they put out 14.3 million copies per edition, Surfer does about 200 thousand. So you can image the reach of 14 million vs 200k. The pay is a touch better as well.

Where is your favourite location to shoot?
I love shooting in Indonesia. Anywhere throughout the island chain is just magic.  I also have a secret spot in Costa Rica that has always treated me right.

Any other photographer or artist that you draw inspiration from?
There are so many photographers that produce unreal work. Here are a few... Diogo D’orey,  he’s a madman in big waves. Jordan Robins because he produces the best split shots with epic lighting. Evan Tryggstrand, he is super pumped all the time and loves his craft. Sean Archer and not because he works with the most beautiful Russian woman on earth (kind of that but) because he’s a master of natural light and the basics.  These are just a few.

Favourite thing to do when you’re not shooting?
When I’m not shooting, I love making people laugh and going for a surf or anything outdoors really.

Cheers Trevor!
Thank you guys.
