In The Jungle by Marjolein van der Laan

Words by Marjolein, edits by SV.

I started shooting photos because I wanted to improve my surfing skills. I guess you’ll need some explanation for that...

I didn’t have the money to go on vacation and surf my ass off at a good surf spot all summer.. That’s why I wanted to work at a surf camp (as they are always located at the right spots), so I could earn money and surf clean breaks too!

When I looked at the options, the surf photographer function sounded fun to me, as a multimedia design student. So I borrowed a camera from school and started shooting in Scheveningen (that’s where I live in Holland). Immediately I was in love with this kind of photography and almost forgot about my surf goal. This has been going on for 3 years now, from that day I never stopped to join surf trips as a photographer.

Explanation of submission and some kind words by Marjolein:

"I always loved the vibe of the surf community as it makes me feel at home, even when I’m on the other side of the world. A platform like SurfVisuals encourages this community. There are so many creative spirits and travellers in this scene and it’s great that you give them a stage - so I never doubted to submit a photo series with you guys. I think it’s great to support this. Plus you have a good taste in photography! I feel like photos come more alive when I can see it in real life instead of on screen, so I’m very stoked about the coffee table book you guys are releasing also!"

Much love x
